Discussion on Downtown Park - Marina
Architect Peter Pollack of Pollack Design presented the latest developments in the Downtown Park - Marina design. He talked about the bulkhead alignment, the four piers, park walkways and view corridors, and the terraced areas by the Band Shell.
Jim Marshall of United Design presented the design of the Harbor Master building and viewing platform, and the design and structure of the Band Shell.
Mr. Pollack discussed the festival tent area, the three spruce trees that will remain, and the picnic area. The Park is designed for an increase of activity; the goal is to keep it open and flexible. He said that the estimated cost of the project is 10.66 million dollars. Mr. Pollack discussed the cost breakdown and said that the emphasis is on providing quality materials.
The people in the audience discussed the following issues with Mr. Pollack: the location and feasibility of an ice rink, the length of time until completion, the railing design, the shopper docks, the wearing down of grass in the amphitheater area, a request to place buoys in Round Lake to show where the end of the piers will be [an aerial picture was suggested instead of the buoys], saving certain spruce trees, the possibility of disruptive behavior in the picnic area, maintaining 30 feet between the south pier and the Ward Brothers' dock, the Waterways Grant and other means of funding, the integration of the Bridge Street sidewalk and the Park, hanging flower baskets and planting beds, lighting, the size and design of the fishpond, Band Shell acoustics, the height of the docks, and requirements for the Waterways Grant.
John Winn spoke about the grant process with the Waterways Commission. He strongly urged Pollack Design and United Design to finish the grant application and mail it out in time to be considered by the Waterways Commission at their December 2003 meeting.
