Find out when City Council meets
City Council meets the first and third Monday every month at 7 PM in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall. Council may meet on a different day if there is conflict with an observed holiday. City Council may occasionally hold special meetings in accordance with the requirements of the Open Meetings Act. All meeting times and agendas are posted in a display window in the entrance of City Hall. This window can be viewed from 7AM to 9PM by the public. Additional questions can be addressed to the City Clerk’s office at 231-547-3250.

Contact a City Council Member
Written comments to city council or individual council members should be routed through the City Clerk’s office and will then be provided to Council. Citizens may also e-mail comments to mgr@cityofcharlevoix.org – fax letters/memos to 231-547-3617. City Council also provides phone numbers to the City Clerk. Please contact the City Clerk’s office at 231-547-3250 to obtain the appropriate number. Public comments are also taken at every City Council meeting.

Access my tax records
Property tax information is available online. This is public information and users may use the following website to search by Tax ID, name of property owner, or address. http://www.charlevoixcounty.org/propertysearch.asp.   DC Assessing is contracted to tax assements for the City of Charlevoix.  Questions regarding tax assessments can be directed to Deb Chavez at 231-350-2727.

Get a new address
Addresses are assigned by the City Manager’s office. The Manager’s office will need the property tax id number to determine the property’s address. Contact the Manager’s office at mgr@cityofcharlevoix.org or 231-547-3270. If a citizen wishes to confirm the address of the property, please contact the Manager’s office at mgr@cityofcharlevoix.org or 231-547-3270. The Charlevoix City Code requires that all buildings in the City display the correct numbers. The numbers are to be Arabic numbers which are a minimum of 4” high which contrast the premises or building. Address numbers should be easily visible for our emergency service providers.

Submit a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request
The City Clerk’s office is responsible for completing FOIA requests. Any questions can be addressed to 231-547-3250. You can also Fill out this form and submit the completed form to the City Clerks office. Completed forms should be hand delivered or mailed to Clerks Office at 210 State Street. The forms can also be faxed to 231-237-0329. Please note there may be costs associated with completing your FOIA requests. Click on the “City Clerk” Department for additional information.

Find out where utility lines are
You should always call MISS DIG three full working days before any construction project requiring excavation at 800-482-7171. (http://www.missdig.net) They will come to your property and properly flag any buried utilities prior to construction at no charge.

Schedule an event on City property
City of Charlevoix permits certain events on public properties, such as parks, recreation areas, streets, and beaches. Events may include weddings, receptions, parties, corporate gatherings, etc. When you know the time and location you would like for the event please fill out the form below and provide it to the City Manager’s Office by fax at 231-547-3617 or mgr@cityofcharlevoix.org. Get a copy of agendas or minutes
All meeting times and agendas are posted in a display in the front entryway of city hall. This window can be viewed from 7AM to 9PM by the public. To receive an agenda or for additional questions please call the City Manager's office at 231-547-3270 or e-mail mgr@cityofcharlevoix.org. For Planning Commission or Zoning Board of Appeals agendas contact the City Planning office at 231-547-3265 or e-mail mspencer@cityofcharlevoix.org.

Submit an inquiry, complaint, or general question
A citizen may fill out the form below or call the City Manager’s office. The inquiry will be forwarded to the appropriate department.  Some examples of previous requests: repair of a street light, trimming or removal of a tree, filling a pothole, etc. If you choose to fill out the form, you may submit it via e-mail by pressing SUBMIT at the top of the document, manually forward it via e-mail to mgr@cityofcharlevoix.org, or send via fax to 231-547-3617.

Get a zoning permit prior to construction
Click on the “City Planning and Zoning” department on the left and then download the application form. You can also contact the Planning Office at 231-547-3265 and the application may be faxed or mailed upon request. Forms can be e-mailed by sending a request to mspencer@cityofcharlevoix.org.

Find information about trash collection and recycling
All City property owners and renters are encouraged to take advantage of the Charlevoix County Recycling Program. Please see http://www.charlevoixcounty.org/recycling.asp for more information.

Household garage is picked up by private contractors. Below is a list of local contractors:

The City pays a private contractor to pick up rubbish from residential homes along public streets. Below is information on the program.

City of Charlevoix Refuse Pickup
The City of Charlevoix provide refuse pickup to single family residential homes in the City. The pickup day will be the first and 3rd Monday of each month, except certain holidays. Click here to download the 2014 pickup schedule.  Below is a list of items that can be placed along the front curb of the residence:

ALL REFUSE ITEMS PUT AT THE CURB HAVE TO PUT OUT ON SUNDAY. ONLY THE FOLLOWING ITEMS WILL BE PICKED UP.

The items to be collected by the Contractor under the terms of this agreement shall be referred to as "refuse". The term refuse shall include, but is not limited to, the following:

  1. Discarded toys.
  2. Discarded clothing and similar materials.
  3. Household appliances, such as but not limited to, stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, etc. (All freon must by removed from any refrigerant unit).
  4. Household furniture, couches, chairs, mattresses, tables, carpet and similar type items.
  5. Passenger car and pick-up tires. Limit 2 per pick up.
  6. Boards 4 ft. in length and secured in bundles.
  7. Christmas trees - scheduled pick up (to be placed at a site designated by the City).
  8. Remodeling refuse if generated by homeowner, (2 cu. yd. limit per week).
  9. Any other refuse items except what is excluded.

EXCLUDED REFUSE
The following items are not to be collected under this Contract:

  1. Earth, sod, rocks, concrete.
  2. Refuse from construction or remodeling, except as in #8 of Collected Refuse.
  3. Trees, other than Christmas trees.
  4. Grass clippings.
  5. Brush.
  6. Household garbage.
  7. Automobile or truck parts.
  8. Manufacturing or trade waste.
  9. Any containers weighing more than fifty (50) pounds, except large household appliances and furniture.
  10. Any item that will be accepted for Recycling - such as, newspapers, cardboard, plastic, glass.
  11. Hazardous products - paint, chemicals, solvents, motor oil, batteries.

Request a tree planting in the City right-of-way

The City of Charlevoix has been a Tree City USA for the past 20 years and makes every effort to budget for the planting of trees and maintain existing trees.  The City has a Shade Tree Commission that includes Landscape Architects to provide professional advice on the appropriate choice of species, removal of diseased trees, etc.

Apply to serve on a City Board or Committee
The City of Charlevoix has a number of boards and committees and sometimes openings come about. If you interested in any vacancies please contact the City Clerk's Office at 231-547-3250. Even if there are no vacancies fill out this form and provide it the City Clerk’s Office and we will keep you posted if a vacancy becomes available. Reserve the Clarence Odmark Performance Pavilion
Concerts and other events at the Odmark Pavilion are administered by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). For information on reserving the Odmark Performance Pavilion in downtown Charlevoix’s beautiful East Park please go the following website:

Reserve a pavilion for a private event
The City has 5 picnic pavilions that can be rented for the day. The pavilions are located at Depot Beach, Michigan Beach and 3 are located at Ferry Beach.   For additional information, maps, and instructions on how to reserve a pavilion click here.

If a citizen wishes to erect a tent or hold an event in a City park, please download the Event/Planning Worksheet by clicking on the link below.  Once the form is completed, City staff will review the request and coordinate needed items.  There is a small fee for using the park. All park uses are non-exclusive. East Park is not available for private events.

Find out information about Garden Plots
Wish to grow a garden, but have no room? The City of Charlevoix offers a 24’ x 24’ garden plot with annual fees established by city council. There are water faucets on site that are shared by the gardeners. Gardeners who had a plot the previous year are given the right of first refusal. Find out information about Seasonal Dockage
The City of Charlevoix has eight seasonal slips to be rented with the following stipulations: Four (4) slips will be allocated for non-tax paying or non-resident boat owners. Four (4) slips will be allocated for tax-paying or resident boat owners. The City also has two commercial seasonal slips.

Below is a copy of our seasonal dockage application. Please fill the form out and return it to the City Manager’s Office. New applications are placed at the bottom of the list. If contacted and offered slip and boater refuses, they are moved to bottom of list. The deposit is also non-refundable when the applicant voluntary withdraws from the waiting list.

The City reserves the right to permit other boat owners to utilize the slip at any time during which the seasonal boater is not utilizing the slip. The seasonal boater shall provide 24 hours notice to the City when he plans to re-occupy the slip after a period of absence.

A seasonal boater has the right of first refusal for a seasonal slip the following year.

Find out information about Burns Street Dock
The City of Charlevoix owns a small dock at the foot of Burns Street. There are four slips for boats less than 22’. The dock is very shallow and is accessible from the foot of Burns Street. An annual lottery is held to determine who gets the slips.  Dockage rates are set by City Council on an annual basis.  The drawing takes place on January 15th.
