2011 Zoning Ordinance Information Page
Questions or Comments: Call or e-mail Mike Spencer, City Planning Director.
BACKGROUND
In February of this year City Council
adopted the 2011 City of Charlevoix Master Plan, which was created and passed following the requirements of the Michigan Planning Enbabling Act. (PA
33 of 2008)
The next step is to draft and adopt a new City of Charlevoix Zoning Ordinance that will be based on the Master Plan designed to promote public health safety and welfare required by the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act. (PA 110 of 2006)
The Michigan Zoning Enabling Act will be strictly followed to ensure that the City lawfully adopts an ordinance that meets the requirement of state laws. Staff will be going above and beyond the minimum requirements to ensure this is an open process and the public is fully involved in adopting a new zoning ordinance.
The existing zoning ordinance is outdated (originally passed in 1978) and is in need of major revisions. Staff will researching what other communities are requiring for many different aspects of the zoning ordinance to ensure the draft is logical and consistent with common practice. Staff will also be utilizing the expertise of LSL Planning who will provide technical assistance as needed. The LSL team has very experience planners who have worked with communities all over the United States on planning and zoning.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
None scheduled at this time. Staff is in the process of creating a draft City of Charlevoix Zoning Ordinance.
